Trump’s Iran War and Tariffs Are Crushing Ohio’s Economy, Businesses Warn
Businesses and community leaders in Northeast Ohio are sounding the alarm: Trump’s undeclared war with Iran and his tariffs are driving up prices and squeezing working families. From soaring gas prices to spiking fertilizer costs, the fallout is hitting hardest those already struggling — and the economic outlook is worsening.
President Trump’s reckless war with Iran and his aggressive tariffs are not just abstract policy moves — they are actively hurting everyday Americans in Ohio and across the Fourth Federal Reserve District. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland’s latest Beige Book, businesses and community groups are feeling the pinch from skyrocketing energy and materials costs, declining consumer spending, and a worsening jobs outlook.
Since Trump launched the war nearly three months ago, gas prices in Ohio have surged by over one-third, climbing past $4.00 a gallon on average. Fertilizer costs, critical for farmers as planting season begins, have spiked by as much as 50% nationally. Meanwhile, tariffs imposed by the Trump administration continue to raise the cost of metals like copper, steel, and aluminum — essential inputs for manufacturers.
The combined effect of these policies is clear: higher prices at the pump, the grocery store, and beyond are straining household budgets, especially for those in the bottom half of the income distribution. Nonprofit community organizations report a decline in financial well-being among their clients, with more people seeking foreclosure prevention and longer stays in homeless shelters due to lack of affordable housing.
Consumer spending is already showing signs of strain, with grocery stores and automotive dealers noticing fewer purchases and trips. Many businesses expect this trend to continue as uncertainty around the Middle East conflict and fuel costs persists.
Ohio Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Clyde sums it up bluntly: “President Trump promised to lower costs on day one but has done the opposite. His war with Iran and tariffs are making life harder for Ohio families and small businesses.” She vows that voters will hold these policies accountable in November by electing leaders who will fight to lower costs and protect working Americans.
The evidence is clear. Trump’s foreign adventurism and trade wars are not abstract geopolitical maneuvers — they are economic self-sabotage with real consequences for real people. As prices climb and jobs become more precarious, the administration’s choices are deepening inequality and threatening the economic stability of communities across the region.
