Trump’s Iran War Isn’t a Masterstroke Against China — It’s a Blunder Fueled by Scandal

The Trump administration has tried to spin its military escalation against Iran as a clever geopolitical play aimed at China. According to some Washington insiders, Operation Epic Fury was supposed to degrade Iran’s regime, weaken China’s foothold in the Middle East, and send a warning shot to Beijing about Taiwan. But this narrative doesn’t hold up under scrutiny.

Michael Sobolik of the Hudson Institute and Grant Rumley of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy lay out why this supposed “China strategy” is a mirage. First, Iran is not China’s most crucial partner in the Middle East — Beijing’s interests are broader and more diversified. Second, China is not as dependent on Middle Eastern energy as Trump’s hawks claim. Third, the idea that a military strike on Iran will deter China from its Taiwan ambitions is wishful thinking at best.

Instead, what we see is a Trump administration lashing out militarily to distract from mounting domestic scandals and consolidate power through foreign conflict. This reckless approach risks dragging the U.S. into a wider regional war with no clear endgame, while doing little to check China’s steady advance on the global stage.

In other words, the Iran war isn’t a strategic masterstroke; it’s a dangerous blunder born from desperation and misinformation. The Trump administration’s failure to craft a coherent, evidence-based foreign policy threatens not just regional stability but American credibility worldwide. We should call out this charade for what it is — a distraction from accountability at home dressed up as grand strategy abroad.
