President Donald Trump’s recent aggressive stance toward Iran is raising more than just gas prices. According to author Anand Giridharadas, it’s also serving as a strategic distraction from the mounting scrutiny over Trump’s deep connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Giridharadas, who has closely examined Epstein’s powerful network, told The Daily Beast Podcast that Trump’s actions could be seen through a “corruption-minded bend” as a deliberate attempt to shift public attention away from Epstein-related revelations. “You might almost imagine it was rational for someone in such a desperate situation to do literally anything to change the subject,” Giridharadas said.

The urgency to divert attention is underscored by the fact that Trump’s name appears more than a million times in the Justice Department’s unredacted Epstein files, as noted by Congressman Jamie Raskin. Despite this, Trump has repeatedly dismissed the Epstein scandal as a “hoax” and denied any knowledge of Epstein’s crimes.

Giridharadas pointed out that for Trump, who saw cracks forming in his voter coalition due to the Epstein revelations, creating a major foreign policy crisis could be a calculated move to regain control of the narrative. “We don’t know exactly why Donald Trump did what he did,” Giridharadas said, “but tragically, literally anything turned out to be” a distraction from Epstein’s files.

This tactic is not new. Author Michael Wolff similarly observed that Trump’s handling of Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro provided a temporary reprieve from bipartisan pressure over Epstein ties by forcing a “fundamental reordering of the narrative.”

The February 28 escalation against Iran, which closed the strategic Strait of Hormuz and sent gas prices soaring worldwide, effectively pushed Epstein’s story out of the headlines. Even First Lady Melania Trump’s rare public defense against allegations linking her to Epstein was overshadowed by the international crisis.

Giridharadas poignantly reflected on the fleeting nature of public outrage: “A war broke out. Human beings circled the moon. Kim Kardashian was spotted with Lewis Hamilton. Memories faded, and the virus of collective rage went hunting for new hosts.” He questioned whether the Epstein story was simply another casualty of a media cycle that lets the powerful evade consequences.

As Trump’s foreign policy maneuvers continue to dominate news cycles, the Epstein files risk being buried yet again, allowing the president to evade the accountability that millions demand. This pattern of distraction underscores the urgent need for sustained public and journalistic pressure to keep the spotlight on corruption and abuse of power.
