Trump’s January 6 Pardons Expose Rob Bresnahan’s Dangerous Loyalty
Rob Bresnahan’s unwavering support for Donald Trump means backing a president who pardoned over 1,000 violent January 6 rioters, including those responsible for the death of five officers. If opposing Biden’s commutation of a single sentence is a dealbreaker, then Bresnahan’s endorsement of mass pardons for insurrectionists should be disqualifying.
A recent letter to the editor in The River Reporter lays bare a stark choice for voters: stand with Paige Cognetti, who supports Joe Biden, or back Rob Bresnahan, who remains in lockstep with Donald Trump. The letter, penned by Pat Wilson of Equinunk, PA, highlights the glaring hypocrisy in rejecting Cognetti for Biden’s commutation of one sentence while ignoring Bresnahan’s allegiance to a man who pardoned more than 1,000 individuals convicted for their roles in the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
This was no ordinary protest. The January 6 riot resulted in the deaths of five law enforcement officers and left at least 140 more injured. The pardons extended by Trump rewarded violent criminals who sought to overturn a democratic election through force and intimidation. Supporting Bresnahan means endorsing a candidate who backs these pardon decisions, signaling a tolerance for lawlessness and a betrayal of democratic norms.
Wilson’s letter cuts to the heart of the matter: if Biden’s clemency for Michael Conahan is unforgivable, then supporting Bresnahan—who embraces Trump’s wholesale pardon of insurrectionists—should be equally unacceptable. This is not just about political allegiance; it is about accountability for those who attacked the foundations of American democracy.
As voters evaluate their choices, this contrast underscores the stakes. Do we support candidates who uphold the rule of law and democratic integrity, or do we reward those who enable authoritarian overreach and protect those who attacked our Capitol? The answer matters now more than ever.
