Trump’s Latest Attack on Mail-In Voting Won’t Derail Oregon’s Primary—For Now
President Trump’s executive order targeting mail-in voting faces a legal roadblock, sparing Oregon’s May 19 primary from disruption. But the fight over voting access is far from over, with November’s general election hanging in the balance.
President Trump’s ongoing crusade to restrict mail-in voting has landed squarely in Oregon’s backyard, but voters can breathe a tentative sigh of relief for now. The state, a pioneer in vote-by-mail elections for over 30 years, is facing a direct challenge from Trump’s executive order signed in late March. The order demands the creation of a nationwide voter list and attempts to block absentee ballots from going to anyone not on that list—an overreach lacking constitutional authority and aimed at undermining the Postal Service’s role in elections.
Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield told KGW that the state’s decades of successful vote-by-mail experience, managed fairly by both Republican and Democratic secretaries of state, should serve as a warning against federal interference. A coalition of 23 states, including Oregon, quickly challenged the order in court, resulting in a legal stay that halts its immediate impact.
Multnomah County Elections Director Tim Scott confirmed that federal meddling will not affect the upcoming May 19 primary. Ballots will be mailed by May 7, with voters encouraged to mail them back by May 12 to ensure timely counting. The state provides ample drop box locations and voter support to safeguard participation.
This is not Trump’s first assault on mail-in voting. Despite his repeated false claims about election fraud, he himself has voted by mail in Florida. His executive order is part of a broader pattern of authoritarian overreach seeking to suppress voter turnout and sow distrust in democratic processes.
While Oregon’s primary remains secure, the shadow of this federal power grab looms over the November general election. Voters and advocates must stay vigilant as the Trump administration continues to weaponize election rules to weaken democracy and silence voices.
