Trump’s Loyal Prosecutor Channels MAGA to Target Comey in Politicized Witch Hunt

Ellis Boyle, the U.S. attorney leading the politically charged prosecution of former FBI Director James Comey, has made no secret of his allegiance to Donald Trump’s brand of aggressive, partisan justice. Since taking office in eastern North Carolina, Boyle has mimicked Trump’s signature red ties, double thumbs-up poses, and social media sign-offs like “Thank you for your attention to this matter.” His press releases echo Trump’s combative language, labeling criminals as “thugs” and “bad hombres,” phrases lifted straight from Trump’s Truth Social playbook.

Boyle’s indictment of Comey — a longtime Trump adversary — came with surprising speed, just days before his Senate confirmation vote. Legal experts say this timing suggests Boyle is eager to prove his loyalty to Trump’s agenda, possibly aiming for a Senate-confirmed judgeship to replace his father, a Reagan-appointed federal judge in the same district. Such a reward would fit a disturbing pattern: Trump publicly demanding prosecutions of political foes and rewarding prosecutors who comply.

Jeffrey Bellin, a Vanderbilt law professor who studies politicized prosecutions under Trump, warns that Boyle’s case exemplifies how federal law enforcement has been weaponized. “While prosecutors are supposed to ignore these kinds of incentives, it is inevitable that some will not,” Bellin said.

Boyle’s background offers little comfort. Before this role, he was a medical malpractice lawyer with almost no criminal experience. His office’s prosecution team on the Comey case is thin and inexperienced, with senior prosecutors pulled away to other politically motivated Comey cases in Virginia — cases that collapsed in court. The current indictment rests largely on a junior assistant U.S. attorney with Medicaid fraud experience, raising questions about the case’s legal merits.

Boyle’s aggressive style extends beyond courtroom filings. He frequently uses colorful, Trump-like language in official statements, calling criminals “big shark bad boys” and warning against “greedy grifters” stealing Covid relief funds. His rhetoric and actions paint a picture of a prosecutor more interested in political theater than impartial justice.

The Department of Justice defends Boyle, claiming he has “the full support” of the agency and is restoring “law and order.” But critics see a Justice Department that has abandoned its independence in favor of serving as Trump’s personal law enforcement arm.

This case is not just about James Comey. It’s a glaring example of how the Trump administration’s politicization of federal prosecutors threatens the rule of law and democratic norms. Boyle’s prosecutorial zeal, fueled by partisan loyalty and ambition, underscores the urgent need for accountability and reform in the Justice Department.

Only Clowns Are Orange will continue to track this case and others like it, exposing how Trump’s loyalists use the justice system as a weapon against political enemies. Stay tuned.
