On Loyalty and Law Day, Trump boasts of restoring “law and order” and ending “lawlessness” while ignoring his own administration’s assaults on democratic norms and civil liberties. His self-styled “Golden Age” of America is a cover for unchecked executive power and attacks on the rule of law he claims to defend.

Trump’s Loyalty and Law Day Message: A Thin Veil Over Authoritarian Overreach

President Trump’s recent Loyalty and Law Day message is a textbook example of authoritarian doublespeak. Marking 250 years since the nation’s founding, Trump claims his administration is “proudly carrying forth” America’s legacy by “restoring our justice system” and “upholding law and order.” But a closer look reveals a stark contradiction between his words and his record.

Trump hails the “righteous principles of equal justice, law and order, and the dignity of every human person” as the foundation of the Republic. Yet his tenure has been marked by relentless attacks on these very principles. From weaponizing the Department of Justice to targeting political opponents and dissenters, to undermining constitutional checks and balances, Trump’s actions have repeatedly subverted the rule of law.

The president’s boast that “America’s borders are secure” and “our cities are reemerging safe” ignores the reality of harsh immigration crackdowns that violate civil rights and the federal encouragement of aggressive policing tactics that inflame social unrest. His claim to have ended “lawlessness” is ironic given the chaos his policies and rhetoric have often fueled.

Trump’s framing of his administration as a “new Golden Age of America” rooted in “respect for our laws” and “reverence for our Constitution” is a cynical attempt to cloak authoritarian overreach in patriotic language. His message sidesteps the ongoing erosion of democratic norms and freedoms under his watch.

Loyalty and Law Day should be a moment to honestly reckon with the state of American democracy. Instead, Trump uses it to rewrite history and whitewash his administration’s record. We must hold him accountable for the real threats to the rule of law and liberty that persist today, not be distracted by empty slogans and self-congratulatory rhetoric.
