Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Makeover Hits the Lincoln Reflecting Pool, Threatening a National Landmark’s Solemnity

Donald Trump’s latest stunt to slap a gaudy blue coat on the Lincoln Reflecting Pool risks turning a hallowed national symbol into a tacky resort feature. This move fits a disturbing pattern of Trump’s disregard for federal norms and public spaces, transforming Washington’s dignity into a Mar-a-Lago sideshow.

Donald Trump’s penchant for turning America’s capital into a Palm Beach knockoff marches on with his plan to repaint the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool a bright, industrial blue. Photos posted by Trump himself show workers slapping down what looks like a pool liner more fit for a municipal swim hole than a solemn national monument.

Originally designed by Henry Bacon and opened in 1923 with a neutral gray bottom to maximize reflection, the pool has long symbolized the solemn connection between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. But Trump’s vision threatens to reduce it to “a large lap pool” or worse, a flashy turquoise “like in the Bahamas,” a color Trump admits he considered before settling on “American flag blue” at his contractor’s suggestion.

Experts like Charles A. Birnbaum, president of the Cultural Landscape Foundation, warn that this makeover risks cheapening the pool’s symbolic weight. And it’s not just about aesthetics. The pool’s 2012 restoration included careful engineering to address leaks and sinking, but Trump’s top-down approach ignores federal preservation laws and established norms.

This reckless makeover follows Trump’s pattern of unilateral decisions that degrade Washington’s public spaces, from tearing down the East Wing of the White House to now repainting historic landmarks without proper oversight. If presidents can redesign monuments on a whim, the integrity of America’s capital is on the chopping block.

Meanwhile, Trump’s attempt to rebrand ICE as “NICE” to soften the agency’s brutal image shows the same shallow messaging tactics. But no slick rebranding can erase the agency’s harsh reality or Trump’s broader assault on democratic institutions.

The Lincoln Reflecting Pool’s color is more than a design choice—it’s a reflection of respect for history, democracy, and the public trust. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago makeover threatens to turn that reflection into a distorted, garish spectacle.
