Trump’s Pardon Spree Turns Justice Into A Party Favor
Donald Trump’s unprecedented use of presidential pardons in a single year has shredded the rule of law, rewarding political allies and violent offenders alike. This isn’t justice — it’s corruption cloaked in clemency, eroding public trust and undermining the very principles conservatives claim to uphold.
Donald Trump has weaponized the presidential pardon power into a tool for rewarding loyalty, not correcting injustice. In just one year, his administration has handed out clemency on a scale never seen before, benefiting political cronies, celebrities, and even individuals involved in violent attacks on law enforcement officers.
This isn’t how pardons are supposed to work. The framers of the Constitution intended the pardon power to serve as a check against miscarriages of justice — a way to right wrongs when the system fails. Instead, Trump has turned it into a party favor, handing out forgiveness like a campaign fundraiser.
Conservatives have long touted law and order, personal responsibility, and equal justice under the law as core values. Yet these principles ring hollow when justice can be bought or bartered through political connections. When proximity to power or the ability to pay for access becomes the currency for mercy, the entire system is corrupted.
Grant MacLaren, writing in the Webster Kirkwood Times, calls out this abuse bluntly: “The pardon power exists to correct injustice — not to reward loyalty or rewrite history.” When presidents use it to shield allies or rewrite their own record, it weakens the justice system and erodes public trust.
We should demand better from any president, regardless of party. The rule of law is not a tool for personal gain or political payback. It is the foundation of democracy, and Trump’s pardon spree is a direct attack on that foundation. This is corruption, plain and simple — and it must be called out and stopped.
