Trump’s “Project Freedom” Escalates Chaos in Strait of Hormuz with Deadly Strikes and UAE Attacks

The Trump administration’s so-called “Project Freedom” has turned the Strait of Hormuz into a tinderbox of violence and instability. President Trump boasted that US forces struck seven Iranian “fast boats” in the strategic waterway, aiming to escort stranded ships through the largely blocked channel. But Iranian state media disputed the US claim, saying two cargo vessels—not military boats—were hit, killing five civilians. This deadly clash marks a sharp escalation in the ongoing shadow war between Washington and Tehran.

Meanwhile, Iran launched missile and drone attacks on the United Arab Emirates’ critical oil port of Fujairah, causing a large fire and injuring three Indian nationals. The UAE condemned the strikes as a “dangerous escalation” and reserved the right to respond. The assault on Fujairah threatens a vital artery for global oil exports, driving Brent crude prices above $115 a barrel and rattling international markets.

This turmoil follows months of tit-for-tat strikes since the US and Israel’s air attacks on Iran in February, which prompted Tehran to block the Strait of Hormuz—a crucial passage for 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas. Despite a brief ceasefire announced in April, the blockade largely remains, with Iran and the US each accusing the other of provocations and false claims.

Trump’s “Project Freedom” claims to protect commercial vessels stuck in the Gulf, such as the US-flagged Maersk ship Alliance Fairfax, which recently exited the strait under US military escort. But the president’s threats to use force if this “humanitarian process” is interfered with reveal a reckless willingness to escalate military conflict in a volatile region.

International leaders have condemned the attacks on UAE infrastructure and called for a return to diplomacy. France, the UK, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and others urge Tehran to end its blockade and de-escalate tensions. Yet the Trump administration’s aggressive posture and disregard for diplomatic solutions risk plunging the Gulf into wider conflict.

This latest flare-up in the Strait of Hormuz is more than a regional dispute. It is a dangerous distraction from domestic crises in Washington, where the Trump administration faces mounting scandals and political pressure. By manufacturing war with Iran, Trump gambles with global stability and American lives to consolidate power and evade accountability. We will keep tracking this escalating crisis and demand transparency and restraint from those who wield military force.
