Donald Trump has launched a provocative military operation, dubbed “Project Freedom,” to force open the Strait of Hormuz, where hundreds of ships remain trapped by Iran’s blockade. The move, announced on Trump’s social media platform, marks a dangerous escalation in the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran, pushing the region perilously close to full-scale war.

On Monday, US Central Command chief Admiral Brad Cooper reported that US forces destroyed six Iranian small boats and intercepted Iranian cruise missiles and drones. Cooper warned Iranian forces to steer clear of US military assets, which include guided-missile destroyers, over 100 aircraft, drones, and 15,000 troops stationed in the region.

Iran denied these claims, including the US assertion that two US-flagged merchant vessels had successfully transited the strait. The standoff intensified with Iran claiming to have hit a US frigate with missiles, while the US dismissed these reports. The United Arab Emirates also reported intercepting missiles fired from Iran, highlighting the volatility of the situation.

Trump downplayed the risks, stating that apart from damage to a South Korean cargo ship, no other vessels had been harmed. Yet in a Fox News interview, he threatened Iran with annihilation if it attacked US ships, while paradoxically suggesting the regime was becoming “more malleable” in peace talks. This contradictory rhetoric underscores the administration’s reckless approach: bluster paired with brinkmanship.

The roots of this crisis lie in the US and Israeli attacks on Iran that began in late February, prompting Iran to impose a blockade on shipping through the crucial Strait of Hormuz. The US responded with its own counter-blockade of Iranian ports. A ceasefire brokered by Pakistan in early April stalled hostilities but failed to reopen the vital shipping lanes. Now, over 850 ships and some 20,000 sailors remain trapped, their welfare increasingly at risk.

Trump’s operation does not involve direct military escorts but aims to coordinate commercial shipping through a southern route mainly within Omani waters. Shipping executives have reacted cautiously, warning that Iran considers unauthorized passage a violation of the ceasefire and that the plan’s success is uncertain.

International leaders are wary. French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized that reopening the strait requires coordinated US-Iran cooperation, rejecting unilateral military actions that only deepen instability.

This reckless escalation is classic Trump: using foreign conflict as a smokescreen to distract from mounting domestic scandals while flexing military muscle without a clear strategy. The risk of sparking a wider war in a volatile region with global economic stakes is real—and the American public deserves to know the full cost of these dangerous games.
