Trump’s Reign of Violence Masks His Incompetence and Corruption

Donald Trump’s political strategy is less about governance and more about wielding violence—both literal and systemic—to cover up his staggering incompetence and corruption. As Daily Kos contributor Vjr lays out, Trump’s rise has upended centuries of democratic progress by reviving the old, brutal logic of power through coercion rather than consent.

The founding principles of American democracy, inspired by thinkers like John Locke and enshrined by Jefferson, rejected the divine right of kings and tyranny. Yet Trump and his Republican allies have aggressively pursued gerrymandering and exploited the Electoral College to entrench minority rule, undermining the very idea of government by the people. This distortion of democracy has enabled Trump to govern by decree, treating the White House like his personal fiefdom while the nation spirals into crises of his own making.

Trump’s second term has been marked by a deliberate appointment of unqualified loyalists, ensuring that incompetence reigns supreme at every level of government. From sending his son-in-law and real estate associates to negotiate foreign policy to dismantling expertise across agencies, Trump safeguards his grip on power by surrounding himself with the blind leading the blind.

But it is Trump’s embrace of political violence that poses the most urgent threat. The January 6 Capitol insurrection and his subsequent pardons of the rioters signal a dangerous precedent: loyalty and violence are rewarded over law and order. Republican lawmakers’ failure to hold him accountable is fueled by fear—fear of political retribution and actual physical harm from MAGA extremists emboldened by Trump’s rhetoric.

In Minnesota and beyond, Trump’s militia-style tactics have escalated violence against innocent citizens and immigrants, weaponizing fear to suppress dissent and destabilize communities. This administration’s lawlessness is not an aberration but a deliberate effort to dismantle democratic institutions and silence opposition.

The question now is whether Congress will summon the courage to act as a check on Trump’s lawlessness or continue enabling a regime that uses violence as a tool of governance. Democracy cannot survive if the rule of law is replaced by the rule of fear and brute force. Trump’s reign is a stark reminder that authoritarianism wears many masks, but its core is always the same: power seized and maintained through violence and intimidation.
