In a disturbing escalation, Trump threatened genocide against Iran, vowed to jail journalists exposing military secrets, and promised sweeping pardons to cronies. Meanwhile, his Justice Department targets a Jan. 6 witness and weaponizes immigration to punish dissent. This is authoritarianism in full display.

Trump’s Week of Threats, Intimidation, and Mass Pardons Exposes Authoritarian Playbook

This week marked one of the darkest chapters yet in the Trump administration’s relentless assault on democracy and the rule of law. From threats of war crimes to mass pardons for loyalists, Donald Trump and his allies doubled down on their authoritarian tactics with alarming brazenness.

On Easter Sunday, Trump took to his social media platform with an expletive-laden threat to blow up Iranian infrastructure, warning the country it would face devastation unlike anything seen before. His post was condemned even by right-wing allies like Marjorie Taylor Greene, who called it “evil” and accused Trump’s inner circle of complicity in his “madness.” While he later pulled back on the threat, the damage was done: the leader of the so-called free world openly menacing genocide against 90 million people.

The threats didn’t stop there. At a White House press conference, Trump threatened to jail journalists who refused to reveal a source who leaked information about a missing U.S. airman after Iran shot down a fighter jet. This blatant intimidation of the free press is a direct attack on democratic norms and national security protections.

Meanwhile, the Justice Department under Trump launched a “highly unusual” investigation into Cassidy Hutchinson, a key Jan. 6 witness, focusing on whether she lied to Congress. Assigning this probe to the civil rights division — typically tasked with fighting discrimination — signals a politically motivated effort to punish a witness who exposed Trump’s role in the Capitol insurrection.

On the immigration front, the Board of Immigration Appeals, stacked with Trump loyalists, issued a final removal order for Mahmoud Khalil, an outspoken critic of the genocide in Palestine. Khalil condemned the ruling as “biased and politically motivated,” highlighting how the administration weaponizes immigration enforcement to silence dissent.

The week capped off with reports that Trump promised mass pardons to anyone “within 200 feet of the Oval Office” before leaving office. The White House refused to deny the promise, instead claiming the president’s pardon power is absolute — a chilling reminder of how Trump uses executive clemency to reward loyalty and shield wrongdoing.

From genocidal threats to press intimidation, witness harassment, and weaponized immigration enforcement, this week laid bare the full authoritarian playbook Trump is deploying to undermine democracy, evade accountability, and consolidate power. We will keep tracking these abuses and holding power to account — because neutrality in the face of authoritarianism is complicity.
