Tulare County Deputy Killed in Line of Duty, Sheriff Boudreaux Vows Justice

Detective Randy Hoppert, a Tulare County Sheriff's Office deputy and U.S. Navy veteran, was shot and killed Thursday while executing an eviction notice in Porterville, California. The suspect, David Morales, was killed at the scene after officers deployed a BearCat armored vehicle to run him over, ending the deadly confrontation.

Sheriff Mike Boudreaux spoke out the day after the shooting, expressing deep sorrow and describing Hoppert as a friend. "He shot and killed one of my friends," Boudreaux said bluntly, making clear his sympathy lies with the deputy’s family, especially his wife who is four months pregnant.

The violent incident involved heavy gunfire, with three of the five BearCat vehicles present sustaining windshield damage. In the aftermath, 34 sheriff’s office employees have been placed on administrative leave as the department mourns and investigators work to piece together Morales’ motive.

The Visalia Police Department is leading the homicide investigation to ensure transparency given the use of force involved. Meanwhile, support has poured in from local and national officials, including Rep. David Valadao, Rep. Jim Costa, state Sen. Shannon Grove, and FBI Director Kash Patel.

Boudreaux emphasized the widespread resonance of the tragedy and the community’s rallying behind law enforcement. He also reaffirmed the department’s commitment to supporting Hoppert’s family through this devastating loss.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on uncovering the full circumstances behind the shooting and honoring the sacrifice of a deputy who gave his life in the line of duty. Only Clowns Are Orange will continue to monitor this story, underscoring the ongoing risks faced by those tasked with protecting our communities.
