Two Years After Crossing Illegally, Chinese Migrants Face Harsh Realities in Trump’s America
The Chinese migrants featured in the acclaimed documentary Walk The Line are now grappling with a brutal reality far from their hopeful visions of the US. ICE Nation revisits their stories amid rising immigration crackdowns and social unrest under the Trump administration.
Just over two years ago, a group of Chinese migrants risked everything to chase the American dream, crossing the border illegally with hopes full of promise. Their journeys, captured in the award-winning documentary Walk The Line, revealed the peril and emotional turmoil behind their decisions. But the story didn’t end there.
The new series ICE Nation returns to these migrants, exposing the brutal gap between their expectations and the harsh realities they now face. As CNA senior correspondent Wei Du explains, many of these migrants had a “super rosy picture” of the United States, unaware of the challenges ahead. Since their arrival, the ground has shifted drastically. Under the Trump administration, immigration has become one of the nation’s most divisive and fiercely enforced fault lines.
Du, who has maintained contact with families like the Chengdu Christians and the Zhao family, reveals how these migrants have had to make sharp adjustments. The optimism that once fueled their journeys has been met with “very harsh pushback,” forcing them to recalibrate their understanding of what life in America truly means.
ICE Nation also captures a country roiling with unrest. The crew arrived in Minneapolis just a day after ICE agent Renee Good fatally shot a 37-year-old, sparking protests and intensifying debates over immigration enforcement. Du, experienced in covering protests, describes the tension as unpredictable and frightening, even more so than during the original filming.
This follow-up series brings in a wider range of voices—from officials to activists—painting a complex picture of a nation resistant to simple labels. It challenges the notion that Americans neatly fall into left or right camps, revealing instead a fractured landscape where immigration and democracy hang in the balance.
Walk The Line earned multiple international awards for its honest portrayal of migrant struggles, and ICE Nation promises to continue that tradition, shining a light on the human cost of Trump-era immigration policies. For the migrants who once dreamed of freedom and opportunity, the American dream now feels like a precarious balancing act between hope and harsh reality.
