Voter ID Pilots in Local Elections: A Solution or a Smokescreen?

The push for voter ID pilot schemes in local elections is being sold as a straightforward way to boost election security and public confidence. But scratch the surface, and it’s clear these pilots are less about protecting democracy and more about restricting it.

Proponents argue that implementing voter ID requirements on a pilot basis allows election officials to test the system’s effectiveness without committing to full-scale rollout.
