You might have watched President Donald Trump's State of the Union address and wondered, "Is gas $1.85 in Iowa?"

Trump gave his first State of the Union address of his second administration late on Tuesday, Feb. 24. Early in the nearly two-hour speech, Trump spoke about gasoline prices being lower in the United States over the past year than during former President Joe Biden's administration.

Here's what Trump said about Iowa's gas prices during the State of the Union.

"Gasoline, which reached a peak of over $6 a gallon in some states under my predecessor — it was quite honestly a disaster — is now below $2.30 a gallon in most states. And in some places, $1.99 a gallon. And when I visited the great state of Iowa just a few weeks ago, I even saw $1.85 a gallon for gasoline," Trump said.

What is the average gas price in Iowa?

The average gas price in Iowa is $2.59 per gallon as of Wednesday, Feb. 25, according to AAA. Premium and diesel gasoline across Iowa are $3.46 and $3.53, respectively.

The average gas price in Iowa is $0.38 cheaper than it was a year ago. Premium gasoline is down 24 cents from last year.

The state's lowest average price in 2026 was $2.31, recorded on Jan. 5, according to GasBuddy. But, gas prices at many stations were below $2 a gallon in Des Moines near the start of the year.

The current average gas price in the Des Moines metro is $2.74 per gallon. When Trump visited Clive last month, the average price was $2.65, according to AAA.

Is gas $1.85 a gallon in Iowa?

The $1.85 price Trump was referring to was the price for E85 when he was in Iowa.

The higher blend of ethanol is often sold at a lower price, with crowd-sourced tracking website E85prices.com reporting an average 25% savings compared with standard E10. It can only be used in Flex-Fuel vehicles and is sold at about 400 gas stations in the state, according to the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association.

On Feb. 25, GasBuddy reported stations in Des Moines selling E85 for as low as $1.99. A Kwik Star station in Davenport was offering E85 for $1.49.

The January average price for E85 in Iowa was $1.88, according to E85prices.com.

Donald Trump touted support for biofuels during Iowa visit

Trump spoke at length about E15 during his Iowa visit, insisting he is confident Congress can get a deal done on offering year-round E15.

While E10, with 10% ethanol, is sold year-round, the higher E15 blend is seasonally banned in some regions because of clean air regulations the ethanol industry contends are outdated.

Where are the lowest gas prices in Iowa?

The lowest gas price in Iowa for regular fuel on Feb. 25 was $2.09 at the Costco in Ankeny, according to GasBuddy. Two stations in Oskaloosa were selling gas for $2.13.
