MILWAUKEE -- Former Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel will not continue as interim U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin.

Schimel, who ran unsuccessfully for the state's Supreme Court last year, was appointed as interim U.S. attorney in November 2025 by U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi. His appointment was never confirmed by the Senate, meaning it would expire on March 17 unless a majority of the Eastern District Court's judges approved an extension.

According to a message posted on the Court's website Tuesday, the judges opted not to extend Schimel.

"In doing so, the Court intends no criticism or commentary on the performance or qualifications of the Interim United States Attorney or any of the attorneys in the United States Attorney’s Office," the judges wrote in a statement. "To the credit of that office, from the Court’s perspective, it has continued to represent the citizens of this district well."

Schimel, a conservative, was previously a judge in Waukesha County before he launched his campaign for Wisconsin Supreme Court last year. He received support from President Donald Trump and heavy funding from billionaire Elon Musk.

Ultimately, Schimel lost to Dane County judge Susan Crawford in what became the most expensive judicial race in American history.

Schimel was elected Wisconsin Attorney General in 2014 but lost his reelection bid in 2018 to Josh Kaul.
