ARLINGTON, Va. — A Silver Spring man who spent four months in prison for participating in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot was arrested for assaulting a person on the Metro.
Bryan Betancur, 28, was arrested Monday night for assault and battery on a Silver Line train at the Clarendon Metro Station just after 10 p.m. Sunday night, Metro Transit Police said.
Betancur was convicted of illegally entering the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. At that time, he was also on GPS monitoring for a burglary case in Montgomery County and had obtained permission to go into the District that day under the guise that he was going to hand out Bibles with a group. Photographs from Jan. 6 show Betancur wearing a Proud Boys shirt, though investigators said he was not affiliated with the group and instead just aspired to be a Proud Boy. Betancur admitted that he climbed Capitol scaffolding and helped pass furniture out a congressional office window, as a part of his plea deal.
In charging documents, he was described as a "self-professed white supremacist" who said he wanted to be a “lone-wolf killer." Betancur was pardoned by President Donald Trump on the day of his inauguration in 2025.
In 2024, he violated an anti-stalking order to be near D.C. activist Brianne Chapman several times. In September 2024, he was hauled back to jail for two months. He was also sentenced to two years probation, indicating that he is still under probation.
On Monday, videos of a person touching several women's hair on Metro trains began circulating on social media. The videos came from live streams from user BryanBetan75949 on X, formerly known as Twitter. The account's name is Bryan On Task, and the user describes themself in the biography section as "Citizen Journalist, Legal Observer. Vindicated Patriot, Political Activist, Prolife,Antivax J6ER Catholic." The account also had posts with several photos of women sitting on Metro trains. The account has since been made private.
Metro Transit Police Lt. Raymond Yslas told WUSA9 that they were aware of the social media reports and said they were actively investigating. Yslas also encouraged anyone who sees or experiences inappropriate behavior report it by calling 202-962-2121 or texting at 696873.
