Voting laws changing
To focus on voting rights seems quaint days into Trump’s illegal, consequential and expanding war on Iran (Cuba next?), but there is a parallel track here — Trump’s war on our elections.
Elections are the responsibility of the states. Trump is not deterred from ignoring the Constitution, laws or precedents, including his threatening to cancel the November elections, gerrymander maps, demand possession of state’s voter rolls for potential manipulation or unilaterally announce his victory. The real voter fraud is being perpetrated upon the voter by Mr. Trump. The focus of legal scrutiny needs to be on him, not voters.
There is no evidence proving that the miniscule incidence of intentional voter fraud is committed by one party more than others. It’s a wash of miniscule proportion. Nothing can be accomplished by making voting laws so restrictive that voting becomes a system of show me your papers or you don’t get to vote, as is the current law under HB 1569, and bills yet to be considered by the legislature. No appropriation for voter education accompanies these bills/laws.
Therefore, it behooves you, the voter, to know how changes to voting laws affect your access to the ballot box. A voter’s best friend is their municipal election clerk. Contact yours to determine you remain on the voter rolls. Ask what additional documents you might need. Don’t wait. For too many, additional documents may take time to access, are unattainable or will cost money.
