PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — Two top aides to Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer were forced out of their roles after being told they had 24 hours to resign, according to an exclusive report by the New York Post.

The Post reported that Chavez-DeRemer’s chief of staff and deputy chief of staff were given the ultimatum after the White House told Labor Department leaders to fire them.

This came after a report by The New York Times on Monday, stating that Chavez-DeRemer had an event with a cake, candles and guests on her 57th birthday, which she rebranded as a swearing-in ceremony, allegedly to avoid being questioned about her use of governmental funds.

The Times also reported on Monday that an investigation had been opened into allegations of professional misconduct by Chavez-DeRemer and close aides after a whistle-blower filed a complaint with the inspector general’s office in January.

The complaint alleged Chavez-DeRemer drank on the job, was having an affair with a member of her security detail, and used department resources for personal trips. The investigation is ongoing.
