During his State of the Union address, President Trump criticized Democrats for refusing to stand while he emphasized that protecting American citizens should be the government's "first duty" over illegal aliens. He urged Congress to override sanctuary policies and impose penalties on officials blocking the removal of criminal aliens, while also highlighting his administration's economic achievements and calling out Democrat opposition to immigration restrictions and youth gender transition policies. Several Democrats, including Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, remained seated or heckled, leading Trump to rebuke their stance.
Trump blasts Dems who refused to stand for protecting Americans over ‘illegal aliens’ at State of the Union: ‘You should be ashamed’
President Trump blasted Democratic politicians who declined to endorse his State of the Union message that the “first duty” of the US government is to protect American citizens over illegal migrants.
“One of the great things about the State of the Union is how it gives Americans the chance to see clearly what their representatives really believe,” Trump said during his Tuesday night remarks in the House chamber. “So tonight, I’m inviting every legislator to join with my administration in reaffirming a fundamental principle. If you agree with this statement, then stand up and show your support: The first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens.”
Duly cued, Republicans led by Vice President JD Vance and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) rose to their feet while scores of Democrats remained firmly seated.
Cameras caught a stone-faced Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) as far-left “Squad” Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) began heckling the president.
“You have killed Americans,” Omar shouted at Trump, adding that the commander-in-chief was a “murderer” above the cheers of Republicans.
“Isn’t that a shame?” Trump said before chiding Omar and her colleague Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.).
“You should be ashamed of yourself, not standing up. You should be ashamed of yourself.”
Once order was restored, Trump asked Congress to enact federal legislation overriding state and local “sanctuary” policies that prohibit law enforcement from cooperating with immigration authorities.
The president also called for “serious penalties for public officials who block the removal of criminal aliens — in many cases drug lords, murderers — all over our country.
“They’re blocking the removal of these people out of our country and you should be ashamed of yourselves,” Trump told Democrats once again.
Tlaib, seated next to Omar, wore a pin that said “F–k ICE” as a dig at the administration’s immigration enforcement policies.
Later in his speech, Trump ripped Democrats again for not standing up after he recognized the mother of murdered Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska.
Zarutska, 23, was fatally stabbed in August on a light rail train in Charlotte, NC, by schizophrenic career criminal Decarlos Brown, who faces the death penalty if convicted.
“No one will ever forget the expression of terror on Iryna’s face as she looked up at her attacker in the last seconds of her life. She died instantly,” Trump said while introducing the victim’s mother, Anna Zarutska.
“She had escaped a brutal war only to be slain by a hardened criminal, set free to kill in America. Mrs. Zarutska, tonight I promise you that we will ensure justice for your magnificent daughter, Iryna.”
After the applause died down, a visibly perplexed Trump asked of Democrats: “How do you not stand? How do you not stand?”
Trump also devoted parts of the longest State of the Union address on record to celebrating his administration’s economic achievements and lashed out at the Supreme Court after the justices struck down several of his tariffs.** **
Trump also tried to woo voters ahead of the November midterms by highlighting his efforts to lower prescription drug costs, and ripped the Democrats for their support for youth gender reassignment surgery.
“Surely we can all agree no state can be allowed to rip children from their parents’ arms and transition them to a new gender against the parents’ will,” Trump said.

“Who would believe that we’re even talking about that? We must ban it, and we must ban it immediately.”
Once again, Democrats remained in their chairs.
“Look, nobody stands up. These people are crazy, I’m telling you. They’re crazy,” Trump said. “Amazing. Terrible. Boy, oh boy. We’re lucky we have a country. With people like this — Democrats are destroying our country, but we’ve stopped it just in the nick of time, didn’t we, huh?”
