Weed billboards all over Michigan are just embarrassing | Letters - Detroit Free Press

Michigan residents and visitors have expressed concern over the proliferation of marijuana billboards along major highways, viewing them as embarrassing and detrimental to the state's image, especially at entry points like the Gordie Howe Bridge. There is also discussion about political issues surrounding the bridge's opening, with some critics blaming delays on opposition from certain business interests and political figures. The articles highlight public dissatisfaction with both marijuana advertising practices and potential delays to critical infrastructure projects.

Weed billboards all over Michigan are just embarrassing | Letters

I totally understand that several years ago, with a rather strong majority, the residents of Michigan approved the legalization of recreational marijuana sales across the state. I personally voted against it. But in our country, when the votes are counted, the majority rules. But to say that I was embarrassed and mortified upon returning from a road trip to Pennsylvania to visit my daughter, to enter the state of Michigan along I-75 and for the first 20 plus miles see nothing but repeated and regurgitated billboard advertising for a litany of weed products, cannabis selling, etc. ‒ I was beyond shocked with the realization that if I was a visitor to our state that this would be my first impression. A state so steeped in destructive behavior that it’s become an obsession.

I’ve always been rather embarrassed driving further up north through the mitten to see these ads continue to pop up all the way up to the bridge. But seeing them with such a prominence upon the entry door to our state on one of the most heavily traveled interstate freeways is beyond comprehension.

You don’t see tobacco products advertised like that. You don’t see alcohol products advertised with that widespread visibility. I don’t understand why the Legislature in Michigan hasn’t corralled this proliferation of insanely insulting ads that do nothing but paint our state as a haven for getting high.

The Gordie Howe Bridge must open on schedule

I hope the Gordie Howe Bridge can open without delay from the Trump administration. Why do U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Ambassador Bridge owner Matthew Moroun want to stop this opening? The Moroun family has spent millions at every turn to stop or slow this bridge from being built. The Ambassador Bridge is privately owned and international, and should be under federal government control. The Morouns have made a lot of money from the tolls over the years.

The Gordie Howe Bridge was built with money from Canada, after the U.S. declined to pay up front. Canada was hoping to make up the costs with the toll money. This bridge will help improve traffic, adding more lanes and emptying on to current freeways. Trump, apparently hoping to use this bridge as a bargaining chip with Canada before it opens, will do nothing but slow down trade, supply chains and the local economy. I really hope this will not slow down the opening of this much-needed bridge.
