The Trump administration abruptly fired NTSB member Todd Inman Saturday and Inman says he doesn’t know why. “To date, I have not received any reason for this termination,” he said. Inman, a former Department of Transportation senior staffer, was appointed two years ago by then-President Joe Biden. NTSB members normally serve five-year terms. Inman was the first board member on the scene of the collision between a Black Hawk helicopter and an American Eagle regional jet in Washington in January of 2025 and gave an emotional account of the destruction in television interviews.

The NTSB is referring all media inquiries to the White House, and the White House isn’t responding to them. Inman’s firing comes almost two weeks after the Board was brought to its full strength of five by the Senate confirmation of John DeLeeuw, the former head of safety for American Airlines. DeLeeuw took the place of former Board member Alvin Brown, another Biden appointee who was fired without explanation last May.
